About Us...

Keith Carr and Rosemary Gano are a duo who play Irish music in the “pure drop” manner. That is, they follow the tradition closely, playing and singing in the style heard in pub sessions and at traditional dances and events. This wonderful music genre is, by turns, spirited, infectious, downright fierce -- and often, profoundly haunting and moving.

The duo's music covers the full range of the tradition's expression, and includes lively reels and jigs, haunting airs and ballads, and spirited songs. Their instrumental sound combines the lyricism of the traditional Irish wooden flute with propulsive rhythms and countermelodies from the Irish bouzouki. Both members of the duo sing, and their voices blend in appealing harmonies. The two met in the Irish pub session scene in the Washington, DC area and recognized that together they could produce music that is truly special. They are both classically trained musicians who bring considerable knowledge and instrumental skill to the mix.

Rosemary Gano & Keith Carr

Rosemary, who plays the open-holed Irish wooden flute and tin whistle, is a high school instrumental music teacher who teaches classes in guitar and piano. She earned Bachelor's and Master's degrees in music from West Virginia University, where her major area of study was the classical flute. She has studied the Irish flute style with several of the great Irish players, including Seán Keane, Mike Rafferty, and Kevin Crawford, and has worked particularly closely with Justin Murphy, the gifted American player. Before moving to the Washington area she was on the music department faculties at Frostburg State University in Maryland and West Virginia Wesleyan College.

Keith plays the ten-string Irish bouzouki (aka cittern), Irish tenor banjo, guitar, and bodhrán, or Irish frame drum. He has studied bouzouki with Robin Bullock, Zan McLeod, and Beth Patterson, and his background includes many years of trumpet and piano study, plus extensive work as a rock and blues guitarist. He graduated from the State University of New York at Albany and the University of Oregon, earning Bachelor's and Master's degrees in geography. Until recently his career has been spent developing computer applications in the service of nature conservation. He was the Director of Conservation Systems for The Nature Conservancy, and was a co-founder of the BioDiversity Institute and the NatureServe organization. In the past year he has decided to pursue his musical interests on a full-time basis.
